Local Engineer Wins National Lifetime Achievement Award for His Efforts to Reduce Life and Property Loss From Earthquakes

Loring Wyllie Receives Preeminent Engineering Award From American Society of Civil Engineers

Loring WyllieSan Francisco, CA, March 13, 2007 – Loring Wyllie, a senior principal of Degenkolb Engineers, one of the nation’s leading engineering firms in the design and seismic strengthening of structures, will receive the 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Achievement Award for his design of seismic strengthening measures. Wyllie’s designs have protected the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the Pacific Gas and Electric headquarters, and UC Berkeley’s University Hall.

“Throughout his career, Loring Wyllie has been dedicated to protecting public safety by improving structures’ ability to withstand the forces of an earthquake,” said ASCE President William R. Marcuson III. “His dedication to seismic design and evaluation exemplifies the characteristics this award recognizes.”

With more than forty years in the field of engineering and design, Wyllie has extensive experience in seismic evaluations, analysis and design of strengthening measures for improved seismic performance. In an effort to improve seismic safety worldwide and to understand building responses to earthquakes better, Wyllie has traveled the world on earthquake reconnaissance missions. This includes the 1972 Managua, Nicaragua, 1988 Armenia, and the 1995 Kobe Japan earthquakes.

The award will be presented April 25, 2007 in Washington, DC and recognizes Wyllie’s lifetime achievements and contributions that have greatly enhanced the health, safety, and economy of our nation and our world.
