Revitalizing a Community Resource
The goal was clear: create a state-of-the-art facility and program where the public can study, create and share art. Studio One offers more than 100 hands-on art classes, monitor-assisted labs and activities for children, teens, adults and seniors at all skill levels for a moderate fee. However, the century-old unreinforced masonry building was not retrofitted as required by law after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Working closely with the architect and the community, we designed a steel beam and concrete slab system that will ensure life-safety performance in the event of an earthquake. This cooperative spirit has not only resulted in a beautiful arts center, but has also garnered the project a PG&E Savings by Design Award for the team’s efforts to incorporate sustainable materials and energy efficient design. In addition, the renovation increased accessibility for the disabled and preserved the studio’s warm and non-institutional atmosphere and historic façade. Studio One is a candidate for local landmark designation.
