Preserving the Past and the Future

The project team had a single mission: protect and preserve this vital campus building. Built in 1909 this is the last major building remaining from the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition. The building has a complete steel frame with concrete one-way floor and roof slabs. The exterior walls of the building are constructed of unreinforced masonry. We used ASCE 31 to evaluate the building’s seismic strength and are currently designing the seismic upgrade and renovation with Thomas Hacker Architects. This project included the upgrade of all major building systems, exterior masonry, terra cotta, and historic interior restoration, and new finishes and equipment. A notable example of the Beaux-Arts Classic Revival style, the building was nominated to the Washington State Historic Register in 1972 and finished construction in August 2007.
