Living to Learn
This is no ordinary dormitory. The Living-Learning Center blurs the distinction between residential settings and academic life, provides the opportunity for more programmed events with academic connections, and promotes more frequent interaction between students and faculty while engaging first-year residents in the intellectual university life as early as possible. We designed the structure for this 120,000 square-foot, 450-bed living and learning space. The first new residence hall on campus since 1963 integrates spaces for academic classes, study groups, faculty advising, informal musical and theatrical performances, dining, and living. The LLC is now a hub of social and intellectual interaction for neighboring buildings, complimenting them architecturally as well as academically and socially. The central plaza dividing the new complex has outdoor seating for the new DUX Bistro and sits across from the performance area, creating a central location for students from all complexes to socialize and study.
