Careers: Meet Our People
Stacy Bartoletti
CULTURE:
I have always felt that the culture of the firm was to provide opportunities for people and not to limit their career growth. Advancement and growth in the firm is really only limited by an individual’s desires. In my current position I look forward to continuing with this tradition and supporting opportunities for others. Beyond my own growth, I stay with Degenkolb primarily because of the people. I believe that this firm has the most talented and qualified people in the industry and as we work together we will achieve great successes.
CAREER:
My career at Degenkolb started in 1993 when I joined the firm after my MS degree from the University of Texas at Austin. I spent 3.5 years working in the San Francisco office primarily gaining experience on seismic evaluation and seismic upgrade of existing buildings. During these early years I also had the opportunity to work with David Bonneville as his assistant on the Structural Engineers Association of California State Seismology Committee. This experience also gave me a real understanding of code provisions and new design.
Late in 1996 a few engineers in San Francisco decided that we wanted a different quality of life and wanted to live where we could more easily afford a home and raise a family. Primarily to accommodate these desires the firm decided to open an office in Portland. I moved to Portland in January of 1997 as part of the first group of people to start the new Portland practice. I stayed in Portland for 5 years with the majority of my time spent working for Hewlett-Packard. The work we did with Hewlett-Packard in Oregon and Washington has been one of my most fond memories and one of the best experiences in my career. When we first stared the Portland office we had a relationship with HP Corporate but really no relationship with the Oregon and Washington sites. We developed that relationship from doing a small $2,000 design job to function as the prime consultant on $20M seismic upgrade projects.
Following the 2001 Nisqually earthquake in Washington we obtained some significant work for an insurace company evaluating several buildings for earthquake damage with the largest being the Starbuck’s headquarters. This business and my desire to manage a small office led to the idea of opening a Seattle office. In late 2001 I moved my family to Seattle and started the new Seattle office. Since this time we have remained a small operation in Seattle but have grown our reputation in the healthcare and higher education markets. In January of 2007 I moved into a firm wide corporate role and now split my time between San Francisco and all of our offices while maning my family and residence in the Seattle area.
PASSION:
Outside of work my activities primarily revolve around my family. I have been married to my wife Laura since 1996 and we have two boys born in 2000 and 2002. My boys are now at the age where they are getting very involved with school and sporting activities. I have and plan to continue to coach both boys in baseball which I enjoy very much. Seeing the boys improve and the excitement in their faces when they get a hit or make an out is a great experience. I enjoy playing golf but do not get the chance to play as often as I would like. I am hoping that as my boys get older we can make it a family activity.
On our free weekends we enjoy going to our family cabin in the mountains outside of Seattle. Going to the cabin turns into a great family adventure particularly in the winter. Once the snow falls we have to snowmobile about a mile from a plowed parking lot to get to the cabin.
ON THE JOB:
Being and engineer is all about solving problems and meeting the needs of your clients. As my career has advanced I spend less time solving actual engineering problems and more time running a business which is not all that different. In running a business we are presented with challenges and problems that also need to be solved. Sometimes is just takes a little different skill set or approach to meet the business challenges. I enjoy my job because it still allows me to continue to function as an engineer while now dealing directly with the firm wide business.
