Will Grogan joined Degenkolb in 2003 after spending six years at another San Francisco structural engineering firm. He previously worked for a multi-disciplinary engineering company near his home in Greater Manchester, England. Attracted by the challenge of engineering structures for seismic conditions, Will has built a practice that includes seismic evaluation, risk assessment and retrofit projects in addition to the construction of new buildings. His portfolio includes construction of medical facilities, higher education buildings, and critical energy/transportation structures as well as restoring historic buildings.
Little Known Fact:
My dad had the patience to teach me to play chess when I was three years old (he was at home recovering from surgery). My game hasn’t progressed much over the years, although I did play on the Chess Team at Xaverian College, Manchester.
Client or Design Philosophy:
Some of the most critical decisions take place before the project begins, in developing the scope of work. This requires a mutual understanding between the client and structural engineer of what is required and, equally important, what is not necessary. I aim for accurate scope definition on each project as the basis for delivering high quality service.
Virtues:
I help to protect the environment by taking the bus to work.
Vices:
Too much time spent riding on buses.
Favorite Project Story:
As a teenager I spent a couple of summers working for small building contractors. On one particular residential project we were converting a house loft into bedrooms. Under difficult conditions we all managed to balance on the rafters until most of the plywood floor was installed. I relaxed too soon and stepped onto the last remaining section of sheetrock ceiling, and only managed to avoid landing in the toilet below (unoccupied) by a swift deployment of elbows over the rafters. The moral – I can think of a few but would like to hear your suggestions.
Special Interests:
I’ve always enjoyed sports and have played over the years on numerous teams including soccer, cricket, track and field, squash, badminton. I now enjoy watching my kids play sports in local teams.
