L’Aquila Italy Earthquake Recon, Day 2

Day 2: Report from Ricardo Hernandez

Day 2 took us on a search to find the remaining three ground motion instruments, a view of the San Salvatore Hospital(which had reportedly “collapsed”, and a close-up view of several multi-story residential buildings constructed of non-ductile concrete frames with hollow clay tile infill, and an interview with Tomasso Trombetti, a professor from the University of Bologna who had studied at UCSD. He had provided very good feedback of what he had seen while he was working on inspections outside of the historic core.

After performing over 11 hours of observations, the Degenkolb Recon teams returns to the hotel for a delicious Italian dinner and prepares for Day 3 which consists of an government escort into the historic core which is still closed off to residents and the public.
