Careers: Meet Our People
Bryce Neuman
Life/Culture at Degenkolb:
Why did you choose Degenkolb?
When I began job hunting some time before finishing my masters, the goal was always to start a career where I could live, work, and play all in the same great place. I had been introduced to Degenkolb’s reputation and project list early on in grad school, and was encouraged by the spread of office locations, all of which were in great neighborhoods and in exciting cities. Soon, recognizing the pride with which Degenkolb promised to develop its engineers into well rounded members of the structural engineering community, I knew I had found my destination.
Your Career:
How does Degenkolb support your career/career goals?
Degenkolb has a developed interest and involvement, at both the organizational and individual levels, in the structural engineering and related communities. I have already had opportunities with technical organizations, high school teaching, early education outreach, city planning and urban research, and even the local arts. If I get ambitious, I’ll be able to do it all…it is after all, a long career. For now though, I will start slow knowing that as time passes, I can make a difference wherever I put my efforts while Degenkolb will be behind me fully supportive.
Your Passions:
What are some of your passions and how does Degenkolb help support them?
Degenkolb also conveniently supports a number of important parts of my day-to-day life. Some five years ago, I began making the vast majority of my trips, both for commuting and recreational purposes, by bicycle. Degenkolb encourages me to maintain this stubbornness, offering parking inside the office and a swap of my commuter checks for ones accepted at bicycle shops. More broadly, knowing that our office is LEED certified and always working on ways to reduce our consumption and waste, means I am part of an organization that takes its many responsibilities to the world quite seriously.
On the Job:
It wasn’t long before I learned how thoroughly Degenkolb values teamwork both inside and outside the office. In my first six months, I have had contact with engineers at every other office, and had great interactions with central services, marketing, and accounting in our San Francisco headquarters. There is a pervasive understanding that, no matter how much experience one has, we can always learn from each other and grow together. In a single month, I may work on a handful of projects ranging from the full-on retrofit of a quarter-million square foot manufacturing facility to the evaluation of a city park for an ice-skating rink…the time flies by.
