Degenkolb Softball

In one of the last games of the 2010 season, the Degenkolb softball team fought hard but came up just short in its second game against URS, with a final score of 17-16.

The team started out strong in the first inning with five runs, including exciting home runs by Bryan Bindrich and Danny Hartnell. URS came back to take the lead 7-5 in the third inning, and it was a back and forth battle for the remainder of the game.

Overall, the Degenkolb team played great defense, though Andrew Scott had to request a new ball at pitcher halfway through the game after “bowling” in a significant number of his pitches. He recovered, though, and was able to finish out the game strong. Gordy Wray led the tough group of outfielders and saved the team from giving up runs on multiple occasions. Bryan Bindrich had some bad luck at shortstop with a few line drives almost taking out his head. A fielding highlight of the game was Allison Hellner’s double play at third base, where she tagged the base and completed the throw to first with time to spare.

A large tree blocking the left field line caused some trouble at batting, but it did save Shane Gross on one occasion. His mishit that would have been caught by the third-baseman was called foul because of the tree. He made up for it on the next pitch with a base hit. Almost everyone on the team got on base at least once, and speedy base running by Kevin Malley and Andrew Scott led to five Degenkolb runs throughout the game.

The final inning was made exciting by loud cheering from the dugout, which included spectators Lucie Fougner, Adam Azofeifa and Jim Malley. Base hits by Brendan Lo, John Sticklen, Allison Hellner, Erik Kneer and Jenn Gross put Degenkolb in position to score the tying run, but the team could not quite pull it out. Everyone was in good spirits after the fun and exciting game.
