Oakland’s Fire Station No. 18 Opens Its Doors To A Renovated LEED Gold Facility

Monday, June 14, 2010 marked the reopening of Oakland's Fire Station No. 18! The Degenkolb team proudly made it out to the ribbon cutting ceremony. The station closed for renovation in April 2009 to accomodate newer model fire trucks, and reopened its doors to a new LEED Gold facility. Oakland's Fire Station No. 18 is the first facility in the fire department to be certified LEED Gold.

Is Seattle Ready For A Jolting Earthquake?

Following the unpredictability of drastic earthquakes all over the world, including Haiti and Chile, cities across the US are now questioning if they are actually prepared in the event a big earthquake were to occur.  Will the buildings remain standing? This is one of the many questions John Siu, principal engineer for Seattle's Department of Planning and Development, and Cheryl Burwell, senior engineer, asked themselves as they walked through Seattle's Pioneer Square.

Chris Poland Presented EERI Northern California Chapter Award

As an active member of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), Chris Poland has been honored many times for his contribution to the organization.  Most recently, Chris was presented an award at the holiday party by the EERI Northern California chapter for his innovation and exemplary practice in earthquake risk reduction in Northern California.

Compton Union Building Makes “Project Of The Week” On DJC.com

 The Washington State University Compton Union Building was recently featured as the Project of the Week in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce website (djc.com).  After two years of work, the $63.8 million renovations of the building were completed in 2008.

The word is out! Degenkolb has officially placed fifth on the 2009 Best Structural Engineering Firms To Work For! Structural Engineer magazine published their annual list of the best firms to work for based on culture, benefits, performance and recognition, compensation, professional development, recruiting and retention.  The ranking of firms was substantially the result of employee satisfaction surveys as well as the analysis of the committee judges.
