We started off the day by heading to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) which was housed in the Christchurch Art Gallery. The only way to get into the Central Business District (CBD) was to get inducted there, obtain a pass and get on a building inspection team. Henry Degenkolb said that earthquakes provide a living classroom for engineers to hone their professional judgment. This will be the company's 38th team sent to an earthquake since the firm opened its doors in 1940.
Led by Loring Wyllie, the team includes Laurie Johnston, Lucie Fougner, John Leuenberger, Chris Mora and Cale Ash. Stay tuned for their blog entries from New Zealand. They will arrive tomorrow.
