The Bowls Project temporary art installation was successful and well-attended throughout the summer; so much so that the run at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts was extended until early October. Alas, earlier this month, the structure's time had to come to an end and it was dismantled and removed.

Senior Principal Jim Malley was quoted in Popular Mechanics' November issue in an article called, "The Earthquake-Proof Building That Is Built to Collapse." The article discusses the efforts led by Gregory Deierlein, a Stanford University civil and environmental engineer, and Jerry Hajjar, a Northeastern University engineer, to design an innovative seismic system that protects skyscrapers. This idea is being hailed by the magazine as one of the 20 bold ideas that will change the world!

It all started from the first SEAOC dinner that I attended. Interestingly enough, the SEAOC dinner that night was dedicated to Henry Degenkolb, a great earthquake engineer. Monday, June 14, 2010 marked the reopening of Oakland's Fire Station No. 18! The Degenkolb team proudly made it out to the ribbon cutting ceremony. The station closed for renovation in April 2009 to accomodate newer model fire trucks, and reopened its doors to a new LEED Gold facility. Oakland's Fire Station No. 18 is the first facility in the fire department to be certified LEED Gold.
