PORTLAND, Ore. — Degenkolb Engineers Principal Kent Yu starts his two-year term as Chair of the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Committee (OSSPAC) this month. In this role, Dr. Yu leads disaster recovery and preparedness planning in the state of Oregon for OSSPAC.

Degenkolb Engineers Perform Seismic Testing on Yerba Buena Center Art Installation
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 2, 2010)—A team of San Francisco structural engineers and project volunteers today conducted full-scale, human-powered seismic testing on a new 20-ton performance arena at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), called the Bowls Project. The project—a 24-foot-diameter main dome interconnected with a smaller 18-foot-diameter dome—is constructed from three layers of 8,000 concrete tiles.

The new Senate Bill 499 is the focus of a San Francisco Business Times article, which features Degenkolb Engineers chairman and CEO Chris Poland. Last year, Chris testified in favor of the new law since the previous 2013 deadline was not economically feasible for many hospitals. Among other things, Senate Bill 499 allows hospitals to have an extension for structural upgrades.

David Bonneville, Degenkolb senior principal, was recently named the 2009 Robert Cornforth Award recipient from the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations.
The Cornforth Award is given to an individual for exceptional dedication and exemplary service to the organization and to the profession. Nominees are submitted to the NCSEA Board by the Member Organizations. The award is given out at the discretion of the NCSEA Board.

Degenkolb is proud to announce that senior prinicpal, James O. Malley, is the AISC 2010 T.R. Higgens Lectureship Award recipient.
Jim is being recognized for his paper "The 2005 AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings" published in the First Quarter 2007 AISC Engineering Journal. Jim will present his paper throughout 2010 and will be recognized at the 2010 AISC North American Steel Construction Conference held in Orlando, Florida.
